Finding Flow When Feeling Low
Hey,
Arlin here, writing to share some thoughts on what to do when you're feeling low, down, like ish.
Whether it's due to eating something off / diet, relationship issues, or just feeling down for no apparent reason, we all have low days. The flow of life plays strings we hate, but we have to deal with it however it unfolds.
Most people will tell you to do affirmations, shout loud, and control your state. That’s fine, but I have a totally different attitude. I have come to understand that the natural flow of energy throughout your body is ‘infinite bliss’, and all you need to do is let go.
Here’s the process I follow:
1. Stream of Consciousness Journaling
First, get all your bothersome thoughts and emotions out of your mind & body and onto a page. When you look at them, they hold less power. I use the 8AM app for this. The important thing is not to let stuff build up without acknowledging it and expressing it. The biggest problems arise only when you hold things in and let them control your actions, or mount until you explode.
And step 1 to releasing and NOT having them build up is knowing what you need to release in the first place. So, stop the bleed by putting whatever is bleeding from you on paper.
2. Relax the Body
Once you have your thoughts down on paper and you’re looking at them - next, totally relax your body. Place your awareness around parts of your body where there is tension and do what Paramhansa Yogananda called “double breathing.” This is when you audibly go “HA, Haaaaaah” and exhale a big sigh. You can do this multiple times until you feel relaxed. This should create an instant feeling of inner peace and relaxation as you let go of the things blocking you from feeling good.
3. Repeat Throughout the Day
Now here is the key.
This is not a one time thing, nor is it a once a week thing…
The key is to continue this relax & release method in micro-steps throughout the day. When something comes up that bothers you, acknowledge it, then relax and release it with a “HA haaaaa.” It’s key when you say “HA haaaaa” that you actually fully embody and feel it. For this to be effective, your body needs to reverberate as if completely shaking out the thing that is bothering you.
And that’s it. Try this out now—think of something that’s bothering you and journal about it. Then do some “HA haaaaa’s” or double breathing as yogananda calls it, and continue doing so throughout the day any time something gets you off balance.
As I mentioned - the 8AM app is a great tool to help you with this process.
It provides a platform for journaling and offers resources to guide you in finding your natural flow and letting go of what’s holding you back. If you haven’t tried it yet, now’s a perfect time. btw - Christ & Yogananda were right on with this.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Yogananda reminds us that, “All material and spiritual hungers are satisfied only by tuning in with divine nature in Christ Consciousness”.
He also teaches us the importance of inward renunciation - aka letting go: “Inner renunciation is of primary importance in the attainment of God. Evil habits are gone only when they are cast off from the domain of thought as well as actions. Since thought is the spring of action, thinking evil may be as dangerous as acting evil”.
