Parents Don’t Get Your Dream? That’s Normal.

Here’s the short version:
If your parents don’t support your career, lifestyle, or vision for the future, it’s probably not personal.
They’re operating from a different mental model - one that was built for the 1970s, optimized for pensions, job security, and polite compliance.
You’re playing a different game entirely.
And the sooner you stop expecting approval, the faster you’ll build something worth being proud of.

Here’s how this usually goes:
You tell them you’re starting something new. Maybe it’s a company. Maybe it’s a brand. Maybe it’s a global adventure that requires no business plan at all.
They respond with concern. Or silence. Or helpful advice about law school.
This doesn’t mean you’re wrong. It just means you’re the first in the family.
Most parents aren’t wired to understand decisions without guarantees.
They’re not trained for ambiguity. They don’t recognize unconventional bets as responsible. They don’t see how internet leverage and niche creativity can outperform the traditional path they followed, college credentials, etc.
And that’s fine.
You’re not here to teach them. You’re here to innovate. Let them catch up later.
A few useful reminders:
You don’t owe anyone an explanation for doing something your heart understands.
If you succeed, they’ll call you brave. If you fail, they’ll say they warned you. Either way, it doesn’t matter.
Your job is to build the next chapter - not edit yourself to match the last one.
Here’s a more actionable way to think about it:
Don’t try to change their mind… Change your environment.
Find 5 people who have done what you want to do. Move in with them. Make bands. Send parents on vacation and don’t explain until they ask if you’ve become a drug dealer.

Most of this is easier once you stop needing applause from people who aren’t your audience.
Parents are great for many things: unconditional love, holiday dinners, and grounding advice about remembering to schedule your dentist appointment.
They are not your startup advisors.
They are not the beta testers for your ideas.
Find people who are.
Then keep going.
